Panu's path to Sensire
I'm from Viinijärvi, part of the Liperi municipality in North Karelia. Growing up, I've always been very interested in computers. ''Why not turn my hobby into a career?'' I thought to myself and went with it. I studied computer science at the University of Eastern Finland and joined Sensire with a study project in the summer of 2014.
Here I was able to learn, strengthen my skills, and get some valuable hands-on experience regarding software development. I was assigned various tasks for both front-end and back-end development. Sensire has a very supportive work culture where one can always ask for and receive help. I liked the job so, after graduating from University, I continued working at Sensire full-time. Now I have been working at Sensire for almost nine years.
What's your role in Sensire?
Software development is like a puzzle that needs to be solved. As a developer, I have worked on both backend and frontend projects, and currently focus on cloud and Android app development with Sensire. Collaboration is key in this field, as no single person can complete a project on their own. We work closely with our customers and team members to create high-quality products that meet the needs and requirements.
The development process is always thrilling, similar to the way a carpenter designs and builds a project using a blueprint. It can be demanding at times, but that's what I love about it. At Sensire, we carefully plan and execute development tasks, always taking into consideration customer feedback and research. It's great to receive positive feedback, but it's even more valuable to receive suggestions for improvement, as it helps us create the best possible product.
One of the things I appreciate most about my job is the freedom and independence it offers. I get to be my own boss and choose which technologies I use. It's a challenging and rewarding role, where I have the opportunity to make a real impact.
Can you give any tips or advice for anyone considering a role in our software team?
The working language in Sensire is English. We have had a few members with international backgrounds in our team. So English language skills would be needed if one wants to join our team. This work requires self-direction skills and a willingness to develop yourself. A certain amount of professional diligence is essential. Don't let bad code come back to bite you. Invest time in writing high-quality, maintainable code from the beginning, and you'll be rewarded with fewer bugs and easier fixes down the road. Take the long view and do it right the first time.We give each other constant feedback on the project and the code we're working on. The coding skills are a good base, but we value the working attitude more. It's ok if you are a more introverted person, but being able to give and receive constructive feedback is important. It allows development and professional growth. We always work in a team, even if this work is considered to be very independent at times. The projects consist of multiple pieces that ultimately need to fit together.
What are your hobbies?
After work, I love spending time with my family and participating in activities we can enjoy together. I'm an avid tennis player and fisherman, but I enjoy reading and expanding my knowledge. In addition, I like to play the guitar and take my kids to music classes, hoping we can learn the ukulele together as a family hobby. My children are passionate about singing and playing instruments, so it's an excellent way for us to bond.
We also love going camping and exploring beautiful Finnish nature. We prepared for pesky insects by sleeping in hammocks covered in mosquito nets. I hope to revisit Lapland as a family, possibly when my children are older. Then we can all fully appreciate the outdoor adventures it has to offer.
